The Festivity of The Madonna della Salute is a sincere popular religious day and the one with a lesser tourist impact. The reason for the festivity, like that one of the Redentore, is to remember the terrible plague of 1630-31.
Hoping to end the plague the Doge prayed the Virgin Mary and if his prayers were to be heard and granted he would have dedicated a great church out of gratitude.
To today, the 21st of November thousand of citizens parade in front of the main altar of the imposing Basilica of the Madonna della Salute to perpetuate the gratefulness that binds the city to the Virgin Mary. In this occasion a temporary bridge made of boats is build connecting the banks of the Gran Canal from the Basilica della Salute to Santa Maria del Giglio to allow the flowing of the procession, Citizens or simply pilgrims come to homage the Madonna and lit a candle praying her to give them good health.
