Palio
Il Palio is a competitive event disputed between the four Ancient Seafaring Republics (Amalfi, Genoa, Pisa and Venice) that in turn organize a boat race to celebrate the splendors and the singular vicissitudes of the four Republics, whose fleets, in the middle Ages, dominated the Mediterranean.
The race is preceded by a spectacular procession, where each "Republic" recalls important episodes linked to the seafaring history of the city.
More than 400 people dressed in historic costumes with flags, trumpets, drums, horses and litters are there to start the fascinating representation that opens the race on galleons at eight rows. The event ends with the awards of the winner with a trophy representing a medieval galËa, that will be kept for an entire year to then be put up again for competition the year to come.
